West Valley ran into a Cabrillo team playing its best beach volleyball of the season, dropping a 5-0 Coast Conference match to the Seahawks Friday in Saratoga. In the opening round, Viking 4's Kristen Hayes and Claire Danna fell 14-21, 24-26 to Cabrillo's Kendra Lis and Alena Fernandez, and WVC 5's Liz McGrath and Katey Holland dropped a hard-fought 22-20, 13-21, 8-15 three-setter to Seahawks Jolie Samuelson and Lena Fiso. Cabrillo 3's Paige Schieferstien and Kylie Kvam upended Vikings Hunter Roberts and Katrina Hochmuth 21-13, 22-13. Viking 2's Morgan Wright and Kaylin Henderson lost a 14-21, 10-21 straight-setter to Deirdre Wilson and Hayley Hall, and, in a battle between two of the state's top 1's pairs, Seahawks Mari Molina and Alex Bol held off WVC's Mapuhola Sekona and Emma Blockhus in a 21-13, 19-21, 20-18 epic. The Vikings (5-1, 3-1 Coast) and the Seahawks (7-1, 4-0) meet again April 13 at the Main Beach in Santa Cruz.
