Vikings sweep Rams and Bulldogs to move to 3-1 in the Coast

Three-set thrillers were the order of the day in the West Valley beach volleyball team's 5-0 sweep of visiting Fresno City Friday in Saratoga. Four of the five matches went an extra set, with the Vikings rallying from a 1-0 deficit in three matches. West Valley 4's Claire Danna and Gabriela Valencia stayed unbeaten against community college opponents with a 21-14, 21-10 sweep of Rams Kenidi MacDonald and Lindsay Unruh. 5's Lizhya Shoomoonof and Elizabeth McGrath came back from a 16-21 first-set loss to FCC's Gabby Verano and Lexi Kirkman to take sets two and three 21-15, 15-12. 3's Kayla Keller and Hannah Reynoso rebounded from a tough 22-14 loss in the first set to outpoint Marina Gonzalez and Keri Leake 21-18, 15-13. Viking 2's Katrina Hochmuth and Rene Wash stopped Julie Castleman and Kele Weedman 21-13 in set one, but dropped set two 15-21. A tense 15-13 third set went to Hochmuth/Wash. West Valley 1's Kaylin Henderson and Mapuhola Sekona also remained undefeated in 2019 with a heated 18-21, 21-15, 15-11 win over Katie Emerling and Mia Corippo. The Vikings (5-6, 3-1 Coast) swept College of San Mateo 5-0 in Friday's late match. Henderson/Sekona took the 1's 21-14, 21-12 over CSM's Sammy Johnson/Hannah Gamez; 2's Hochmuth/Wash held off Ihouma Kanu/Anmol Sharma 21-12, 14-21, 15-11; 3's Keller/Reynoso swept Megan Campbell/Jada Sealy 21-12, 21-8; 4's Danna/Valencia downed Tori Miranda/Francesca Diaz 21-5, 21-0. WVC heads to Rocklin Wednesday (3/27) for a Coast-Big 8 battle against Sierra (5-3, 2-0 Big 8) and Marin (3-6, 0-2).
