Viking beach and indoor volleyball standout Mapuhola Sekona was crowned the West Valley College Female Athlete of the Year at the annual Athletics Scarf Ceremony Tuesday night in Saratoga. Sekona teamed with Kaylin Henderson to win the Coast and NorCal pairs championships and finish second in the state pairs tournament. All three achievements were firsts for a West Valley and NorCal pair. She was a 2018-19 1st team All-Coast indoor and beach player. In indoor, she led the state in kills-per-set (5.09) and was an All-Region selection in 2017, and a 1st team All-State and All-America selection in 2018. She showed her indoor versatility by leading the Vikings in kills-per-set (4.76), total kills (447), and digs (294), and was second in service aces (43). She led NorCal and was second in the state in kills-per-set. Sekona will attend CSU Bakersfield on a full athletic scholarship.
