Tuesday's two big hits, one by Robert Zamora and one by Hunter Schilperoort, will forever be a part of Valhalla lore. But equally memorable was the West Valley baseball team's gritty eight-inning, eight-run comeback against arch-rival De Anza in a Coast Conference battle between two teams fighting for their playoff lives.

Trailing 8-5 and down to their final four outs, Zamora lifted a 1-1 Josh Longabaugh pitch to deep right field that bounced off Anthony Gaskins' glove and over the fence for a grand slam, driving in Marco Salvetti, Erik Ochoa and Jake Pao and giving the Vikings a 9-8 lead. Gaskins would redeem himself with an RBI double that tied it at 9-9 with one down in the top of the ninth. Viking reliever Julian Ortiz would end the Don threat, getting Sean Rooney on a flyout to left and striking out a looking Longabaugh.

Troy Gilmore walked to open the West Valley ninth and advanced to second on Ruben Trejo's sacrifice bunt. Salvetti popped to short for the second out and up stepped Schilperoort, who sent the first pitch he saw from Tyler Jochen back up the middle to score Gilmore and ignite a Viking celebration in left field.

Things didn't look good early for the Vikings (19-17, 7-9 Coast-Golden Gate) as De Anza (17-18, 6-10) jumped out to a 6-0 first inning lead. West Valley reliever Anthony Bartholic took over in the second and shut down the Dons, striking out nine and giving up two hits in five innings. Ortiz picked up the win and the 15-hit Viking attack was led by Salvetti's 3-6, two run outing, and two hits apiece for Schilperoort, Erik Ochoa and Kyle Ochoa. WVC's playoff drive continues Thursday (4/19) at Chabot (18-16, 10-5). First pitch is 3:00pm.
