Mason Mooney twirled a nine-strikeout two-hitter in the West Valley baseball team's 2-0 shutout of Yuba in the ninetcap of Thursday's doubleheader at Valhalla. Mooney gave up a leadoff single to Aidan Gums and then hurled hitless ball until another Gums single in the top of the sixth. He struck out the side in the second and engineered four three-up-three-down innings. The Vikings (3-6) picked up the only run they would need in the third on a two-out single from Jake Pao and an RBI double from Zach Smits. Smits added an insurance run in the sixth when he singles and scored on a Jonathan Teschner single. In the opener, West Valley squandered 4-0 and 6-3 leads, giving up seven unearned runs on eight walks, a hit batter and two errors in the 11-9 loss to the 49ers (4-3). Danny O'Reilly stayed hot at the plate with a two-run double in the first inning, giving him eight RBI the last two WVC games. Smits and Nate Petrov both finished 2-4 with an RBI. The Vikings begin a three-game series with Modesto (4-1) Tuesday (2/12) at Valhalla. First pitch is 2:00pm. The series continues Thursday (2/14) with a 2:00pm game at Modesto and returns to Saratoga Saturday (2/16) for a 1:00pm contest against the Pirates.
