Mason Mooney's complete-game gem gave the West Valley baseball team a 9-3 win over crosstown rival Mission Thursday at Valhalla. Playing perhaps their finest game of the season, the Vikings moved to within a game of the Coast-Golden Gate lead with their second straight win over the Saints. Mooney scattered four hits, walked one, struck out a season-high 11 and was supported by a 12-hit offensive attack. Mooney opened the game with back-to-back K's, but the Saints answered with back-to-back doubles to grab a 1-0 lead. Mission would get only two more hits the rest of the way. Nate Petrov put the Vikings (16-17, 9-5 Coast-Golden Gate) in front for good with a two-run single in the home half of the first. Danny O'Reilly made it 3-1 Vikings when he reached on an error that scored Petrov. After the Saints (23-8, 10-4) closed to within 3-2 in the 3rd, Zach Smits and Petrov singled to open the bottom of the inning. Steven Grizzle then launched a three-run homer to left to give the Vikings a 6-2 lead. West Valley added a solo run in the fourth on an Erik Ochoa SAC fly, and put two more on the board in the eighth on O'Reilly's RBI single and Jake Pao's RBI double. Petrov finished the day 3-4 with two RBI, Grizzle went 2-4 with three RBI, and Pao had a pair of doubles and an RBI in four at-bats. The Vikings close out their six-game homestand Saturday (4/13) against De Anza (9-20-1, 4-10). First pitch is 1:00pm.
