Since taking over as the West Valley mentor in 2012, Rick Wiens' Vikings have had 92 four-year transfers, 36 All-Coast Conference 1st team players, four All-Americans, five All-NorCal players, three Coast Gold Gove Award winners, the 2015 Coast Conference MVP, Billy Mullins, the two-time (2021-2022) Coast MVP, Curran Ozawa-Burns, and the 2023 Coast Pitcher of the Year, Roman Connolly.

In 2023, for the second consecutive year, the Vikings played every game on the road while the sparkling new Valhalla was being completed. The 2022 Vikings finished 25-18 overall, 14-6 in the rugged Coast-North, just a game out of first. WVC topped Monterey Peninsula 9-6 in the opening round of the CCCAA NorCal playoffs and then fell to eventual state runner-up Folsom Lake in the next round, closing out the season with an epic 7-6 12-inning battle in Folsom.

The Viking offense has been heavily impacted since Wiens joined the WVC staff as an assistant in the 2006-2007 season. Most notably, the 2008 WVC squad hit a staggering .328 on the season, with Ryan Tregoning hitting a league high .442. The 2008 Vikings also blasted 19 home runs and stole 98 bases. Viking outfielder Jason Codiroli was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 19th round after the 2008 season.

Coach Wiens, a San Jose native, attended Pioneer High School where he was an all-league outfielder in 1995. He began his college career as an All-State outfielder at De Anza in 1997, hitting .435 with eight home runs and an amazing 29 stolen bases in 29 attempts. His playing career continued at Arizona State, a team that went to the College World Series in 1998. He transferred to the University of Nevada-Reno in 1999, where he helped lead the Wolfpack to the NCAA Regionals. He started his college coaching career at Cabrillo College in 2003 as the hitting instructor and 1st base coach.

Rick Wiens holds a Bachelor’s and Master's Degree from National University and resides in San Jose.
