Despite a game-tying Alexis Rincon goal in the final minute of extra time, the West Valley men's soccer team fell to City College of San Francisco in Saturday's CCCAA NorCal semifinal in Saratoga.
The Rincon goal squared things at 2-2 and sent the game into penalty kicks where the Rams prevailed 5-4. Rodolfo Castro gave the Vikings an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. CCSF's Alejandro Perez fired in a close-range rebound to tie it at 1-1 in the 60th minute. Perez gave the Rams a 2-1 lead seven minutes into extra time to set the stage for Rincon's goal just before the final horn.
In 2018, Coach Gaspar Silveira's Vikings were once again among California's elite programs, finishing with a 16-2-3 record and winning their second straight Coast title with an 11-1-1 mark. West Valley led the state in goals (84) and goals-per-game (4.0) and outscored Coast opponents 58-7. Castro finished second in the state and topped the Coast in goals (22), assists (19) and total points (63). Rincon was second in the Coast in assists (16), and third in goals (13) and points (42). Keeper Yannick Lamers led the conference in goals-against (0.73), was second in save % (.824) and third in saves (61).
