West Valley men's soccer stalwarts Rodolfo Castro and Gerardo Martinez were named to the prestigious 2018 United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III Men's All-America team Thursday. Yannick Lamers was selected to the DIII West Region second team, giving the Vikings three All-Region honorees, tops in the nation along with recently crowned CCCAA champion Cerritos. Castro earned first-team All-America honors. The sophomore forward from San Jose was second in the CCCAA in goals (22), assists (19) and total points (63). Martinez, a first-year defender from San Jose, was named to the second team. He anchored a Viking defense that held opponents to 17 goals in 21 games. WVC's 84-17 goal differential led the CCCAA. Lamers, a sophomore from Cape Town, South Africa, was the 2017 Coast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, and surrendered only 13 goals in 2018, a 0.80 goals-against-average, and recorded a .809 saves percentage and ten shutouts in 18 starts. Kansas City-based United Soccer Coaches was founded in 1941 and is the world's largest soccer coaches' organization.
