Late Errors Negate Viking Rally in 6-5 Loss at American River

Samantha Fletes' two-run single rallied the West Valley softball team to a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh, but two errors in the bottom of the inning handed American River a 6-5 win in Sacramento Tuesday. The Vikings (5-4) jumped out to a 2-0 third inning lead, but the Beavers (6-3) answered with a solo run in the bottom of the third and three runs in the fourth. Maddy Lucey led off the seventh with a single, and back-to-back walks to Alex Pussich and Jessell Lewis loaded the bases. Fletes ripped a shot to right to score Lucey and Pussich for a 5-4 WVC lead. Two ARC singles and a pair of Viking errors gave the Beavers the tying and winning runs. Fletes ended the day 2-2 with three RBI, while Pussich was 3-4 with an RBI and Lewis was 2-2 with two RBI. Reina Maldanado took the complete-game loss. Kayla Grubert led ARC with three hits and an RBI in four at-bats; Zinnia Thewlis earned the win in relief. West Valley takes on NorCal #1 Sierra (10-1)Thursday (2/15) at 1:00pm at San Jose City College and then returns home for a Saturday doubleheader against Lassen (4-3). Game times are noon and 2:00pm.
