The West Valley softball team opened 2018 Coast play with an uninspired 11-2, six-inning loss to San Jose City Wednesday afternoon in Saratoga. The Vikings (9-7, 0-1 Coast-South) took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but it was all downhill from there. The Jaguars (8-7, 1-0) took advantage of four Viking errors and roughed up WVC pitchers with 11 hits and three runs in the 2nd and 4th and four runs in the top of the 6th. SJCC starter Madisyn Gutierrez-Urban keep the Vikings guessing all game, finishing with four strikeouts and scattering five hits over six innings, to pick up the win. Jessell Lewis (5-3) took the loss. Lewis had a pair of hits, including a 5th-inning double, to lead the Viking offense. West Valley looks to rebound with a non-league doubleheader against College of the Redwoods this Saturday (3/3) at the West Valley Softball Complex. Game times are noon and 2:00pm.
