West Valley coach Jennifer Kerwin inserted Melanie Asquith into the starting lineup just as the sides were being announced Tuesday afternoon. The sophomore striker rewarded Kerwin's last-minute decision by finding the back of the net twice in the opening minutes to ignite the Viking women's soccer team to an impressive 7-0 blanking of Chabot in the Coast Conference opener in Saratoga. Asquith opened the scoring at 10' off a Milka Perez helper and then buried an unassisted goal five minutes later. Asquith wasn't alone with the offensive heroics, as Alex Spatola and Ashley Wallace both scored twice for the Vikings (6-1-3, 1-0-0 Coast). Spatola (Perez assist) made it 3-0 in the 21st minute, and Wallace (Katie Bonvicino) gave WVC a 4-0 lead at 29. April Lopez (Alejandra Nuno) closed out the first half with a score at 39'. Spatola took a Perez pass down the left side of the box in the 49th minute for her second goal and Wallace closed things out 20 minutes later off a Daniela Jacquez helper. Keeper Samantha Coelho turned away four Chabot shots to book her fifth shutout of the season. The Vikings hit the road Friday (9/28) for an important Coast contest against Evergreen Valley. Kickoff is 7:00pm.
