Intensity, thrills and community college volleyball at its finest seems to follow West Valley whenever it tangles with Hartnell. Such was the case again Friday night as the Vikings took an epic 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9 match from the state's sixth-ranked team. On Oct. 3 in Salinas, the Vikings (12-8, 5-3 Coast-North) succumbed to a rally from the Panthers (21-4, 5-2) in a five-set barnburner. Mapuhola Sekona was superlative Friday, knocking down a match-high 24 kills, but the state's kills-per-set leader was not alone. The Vikings played arguably their best all-around match of 2018 with notable efforts from Kaylin Henderson (13 kills) and Shannon Greene (nine kills and three solo stuff blocks). Hannah Reynoso had two huge service aces in a fifth set in which the Vikings never trailed. WVC looks to build on its fourth win in five matches Wednesday when it travels to Aptos to take on state #2 Cabrillo (21-2, 8-0) in a Halloween thriller. First serve is 6:30pm.
