The West Valley volleyball team opened the Coast Conference season with a tight, inconsistent 3-1 win at San Jose City Friday night.

The Vikings (9-6, 1-0 Coast-South) were error-prone all night, having to rally for 25-22, 27-25 and 28-26 wins in sets one, two and four. The Jaguars (7-5, 0-1) took advantage of 16 WVC hitting errors in the third set alone to claim a 25-21 win.

WVC staged a huge fourth set rally, staving off three set points. Elia Duenas connected on a swing to give the Vikings a 27-26 lead and then teamed with Renee Martin to block a Tati Iosefa attempt on match point. Rene Wash had a match-high 17 kills, while Kayla Keller recorded 10 digs and three aces. Della Trimble finished with 29 assists, Kelly Mahoney had five blocks, and Hannah Moore and Martin joined Keller with three service aces each.
