It came down to an epic third set in the 1's pair to decide the West Valley beach volleyball team's match with Fresno City Friday in Santa Cruz. Rams Katie Emmerling and Mia Corippo hung on for a 17-15 set win, and a 2-1 pairs match win over WVC's Kaylin Henderson and Mapuhola Sekona that gave FCC a thrilling 3-2 win over the Vikings. The match, between two of the top teams in the state, was tied 2-2 when Henderson/Sekona took set two 21-10 to force a deciding third set. The opening round was even at 1-1 after Viking 4's Claire Danna and Gabriela Valencia rallied to stay unbeaten in 2019 with a 15-21, 21-16, 15-5 win over Lexi Kirkman and Gabby Verana. A tight 5's match went to FCC's Abbey Briggs and Lindsay Unruh 19-21, 21-15, 15-12 over Lizhya Shoomoonof and Elizabeth McGrath. The 2's and 3's pairs ended in sweeps. Ram 2's Julie Castleman and Kele Weedman topped Katrina Hochmuth and Rene Wash 21-17, 21-14, while Viking 3's Kayla Keller and Hannah Reynoso swept Marina Gonzalez and Kenidi MacDonald 21-17, 21-12. The win leapfrogged the Rams (11-3, 7-1 Coast) past the Vikings (11-7, 7-2) into the top spot in the Coast Conference and avenged a 5-0 Viking sweep on 3/22. WVC blanked San Mateo 5-0 in Friday's late match. West Valley closes out the regular season Friday (4/19) against Cabrillo (4-10, 3-5) in Saratoga. First serve is 1:00pm.
