Baker is Coast-South MVP, Afifi lands1st-Team nod; Banks, Elkannan and Yoshikawa also honored

The West Valley basketball team, the recently-crowned Coast-South Conference champions, dominated the All-Coast-South Conference postseason awards, it was announced Tuesday.
 
First-year guard Ben Baker was named the Coast-South Player of the Year, and was joined on the All-Coast-South First Team by fellow freshman Adam Afifi. Sophomore Devon Banks garnered Second Team placement and Sufyan Elkannan earned Honorable Mention honors
 
Baker posted overall team highs in points (19.2), rebounds (8.3) and assists (2.6), while Afifi finished conference action with 17.5 points/game, 9.8 rebounds/game and 2.6 blocks/game. Banks, who was also acclaimed the top defensive guard in the Coast-South, tallied 6.8 points/game, 4.6 rebounds/game, 2.5 assists/game and 1 steal/game in conference play. Sixth man Elkannan notched 12.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per league contest.
 
Coach Danny Yoshikawa, who returned to Saratoga this year after a successful stint as the lead assistant at Saint Mary's College in Moraga and led the 2020 Vikings to their first conference title since 2006, was named the Coast-South Coach of the Year.
