Viking aquatics' Scheer named 2022 WVC Women's Athlete of the Year

West Valley water polo player and swimmer, Johanna "Jojo" Scheer was named the 2022 West Valley College Women's Athlete of the Year at the recent Student-Athlete Scarf Ceremony. Scheer joins Sayeh Faridnia (2018) as Viking women's aquatics AOY winners.

It's not often any program has the state's best defensive AND offensive players on the same team at the same time. In 2021, West Valley women's water polo was one of those teams. The 2021 CCCAA state champions had state tourney MVP Grace Smith in goal and Scheer, the state's leading goal scorer, on attack.

Scheer is one of the most competitive and dominant players to ever wear a Viking cap. Her statistics in 2021 were astonishing, as she led the state in goals with 142. That total is even more impressive considering she missed six games due to injury and the second highest goal total was 99, a difference of 43 goals. She led the state in shots with 285, 82 more than the next highest total. She averaged more than five goals per game on the year, when in many contests, the Vikings had huge leads and she barely saw the water in the second half.

Scheer scored 23 goals in three games in the NorCal regional tournament and had four goals against Fullerton in the state semifinal and two goals in West Valley's 6-5 win over Santa Barbara in the state championship.

She was a swim All-America in five events - the 200 Free, the 200 Free Relay, the 200 Medley Relay, the 400 Free Relay and ther 800 Free relay.

And, she'll be back in 2022-23 to help the Vikings defend their Coast, NorCal and state titles.
