State finalist Porras leads Vikings into 2023 season

Flor Porras, who teamed with Katie Kishton to play for the 2022 CCCAA beach volleyball pairs championship, returns to lead a young Vikings squad into a rugged 2023 season. Kishton is now playing at Santa Clara University, but Porras is one of four sophomores and ten first-year players ready to take on one of the CCCAA's most formidable schedules.

West Valley opens 2023 with the West Valley Pre-Season Pairs Tournament Jan. 27, featuring a quartet of the state's premier beach programs, Feather River, Fresno City, Sierra and WVC. The Vikings host the Wolverines and the Golden Eagles again Feb. 16 and then welcome the University of San Francisco for its annual visit to Saratoga Feb. 23.

Coast Conference action, and the league is loaded again with state championship contenders, gets underway March 3 at Main Beach in Santa Cruz against Gavilan and Fresno City. Conference competition is completed April 28 with the Coast Pairs Championships at Main Beach in Santa Cruz.

West Valley will host the CCCAA NorCal Pairs Championships May 5 and the CCCAA State Team and Pairs Championships May 11-13.

In addition to Porras, the 2023 Vikings roster includes returners Sydney Rogers and Kiana Manson and second year player Devin Derecho. Tristin Sahlie, expected to be one of the state's top players, will finally hit the sand after battling a knee injury in 2022. Nine newcomers - Gabrielle Carbonel, Maggie Carroll, Ahnessa Clemente, Alex Franklin, Aubree Lang, Jillian McHenry, Amelie Moya, Sydney Pista and Taylor Valles - will battle for spots in coach Armen Zakarian's lineup.
