Prokter claims ITA California singles championship

West Valley's Abigail Prokter captured her second straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) state championship last weekend at American River College. Prokter, who teamed with Seraphina Vossen to win the doubles title in 2021, claimed the singles crown with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Bakersfield's Greta Krueger. The win sends Prokter to the ITA Cup national championship tournament Oct. 13-16 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, GA.

"Being an ITA champion and earning a berth at nationals is a huge accomplishment," said West Valley coach Lauren Hickey. "And there are very few players who've gone back-to-back like Abby did. It was great to see how her game has evolved from last year."

Prokter rolled through the field in Sacramento, topping ARC's Maiah White 7-5, 6-2 in the quartefinals and besting Brunia Boliscar of Modesto 6-3, 6-1 in the semis.

"What impressed me most about Abby this weekend was her mental toughness," Hickey added. "She was able to withstand all the runs and adversity in her matches and always had an answer for her opponents."

Prokter was a key element of West Valley's 2021 success, as she went 14-1 in Coast Conference singles matches and qualified for both the CCCAA NorCal and State Championship tournaments. She was named to the All Coast Conference team and was the ITA Region One Rookie of the Year.

Viking players Lindsay Lee and Sonya Hu also had strong outings, with both advancing to the round of 16.

"It was really great to watch all our players compete," said Hickey. "It was a deep draw that included players from southern California. I was very proud of how we competed. We learned a lot and are excited to get back to work and prepare for our next tournament."
