MVP Porras heads All-Coast picks for NorCal finalists

Conference most valuable player awards typically go to front-line hitters, those outsides and middles who rip rockets between defenders and make offenses ring up points and side-outs. The 2022 Coast-South Conference MVP selection - West Valley's Flor Porras - was on the receiving end of those swings and her defensive prowess made her the first libero to be honored after a long stretch of front-line players.

Porras had a team-high 342 digs (4.62 digs per set), 53 assists and 25 service aces for the three-time Coast-South champions. The multi-sport athlete also teamed with Katie Kishton for a state runner-up finish in the 2022 CCCAA Beach Volleyball Pairs Championship. She will return for the 2023 beach season.

Joining Porras on the All-Coast South 1st Team are Sydney Rogers, who was also a 1st Team selection in 2021, and first-year players Kiana Manson and Nunu Saulala. Rogers handed out a team-high 408 assists (6.0 APS), along with 149 digs, 26 service aces and 18 kills. Manson finished with 208 kills (3.30 KPS), a .252 hitting %, 71 digs and 23 blocks. Saulala capped her freshman year a team-high .88 blocks per set, 91 kills, 57 blocks and 30 digs.

Viking 2nd Team selections are Gabrielle Carbonel, Alex Franklin, Sydney Pista and Tristin Sahlie. Carbonel led WVC with 28 aces, handed out 257 assists and came up with 96 digs. Franklin, despite missing seven matches to injury, compiled 149 kills (2.81 KPS), 46 digs and 17 blocks, while Pista averaged 0.63 blocks per set, to go along with 47 kills, 32 blocks, 29 digs and 15 aces.

WVC coach Armen Zakarian picked up his third-consecutive Coast-South Coach of the Year trophy.
