Vikings Dominate the Competition at Mt. San Antonio Invitational

The West Valley women's water polo team left a tsunami-like mark on the 2023 Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, improving their season record to an impressive 10-1. For the second consecutive tournament they were led by offensive force, Aiyana Mendoza, scoring 17 goals in four games. The Vikings showcased their skill and their remarkable depth during this tournament, as every Viking found the back of the net over the weekend. The Vikings opened with a 20-5 victory over Grossmont. 

Mendoza continued her hot streak, with her five-goal contribution, in the 16-8 win against Fullerton. Fellow Vikings Bella Raynes scored three goals and Hannah Edwards, Mia Sickler-Lopez, & Marte Skibba found the net twice.  

The much-anticipated matchup between West Valley and Saddleback closed the tournament. The Bobcats (11-3) were determined to try and halt the Vikings' winning streak. However, Mendoza was on fire opening the game with four goals and ending the quarter 4-1, Vikings. 

The Bobcats continued their determination to claw their way back. As the game progressed,  Bella Raynes found the back of the net two times followed by Aiyana Mendoza, Hannah Edwards & Taylor Hendricks, thanks to four assists by Sofia Orlandi Lazzarini

At halftime, the score was 8-2, and by the end of the third quarter, it was 15-6. The game concluded with Mendoza as the top scorer, netting seven goals. Anastasija Koreni followed closely with four goals, while Bella, Hannah, and Alex each contributed two goals. Taylor and Sofia added 1 goal each, resulting in a final score of 19-10. Notably, WVC's goalkeeper, Aspen Tweed, played a pivotal role in the team's success, making 25 saves and consistently standing out on the tournament's stat sheet.
