The West Valley baseball team shook off a three-run error in the top of the eighth for a 10-7 come-from-behind win over Modesto Thursday at Valhalla. Trailing 3-0 after two, the Vikings (5-4) grabbed a 4-3 lead on Jake Pao's two-run single in the bottom of the third. West Valley made it 6-3 in the seventh on Pao's leadoff triple and Rich Meyers' three-bagger two batters later. The Pirates (6-4) stormed back to a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth when Chris Alonzo's single got behind Meyers in left and rolled to the fence, scoring Jon Temple, Nick Price and a steamrolling Alonzo. The Vikings took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two Pirate errors, a Troy Gilmore sacrifice fly, a Pao RBI single and a two-run single from Meyers. Anthony Encalade laced a two-out single for the Pirates in the ninth, but Steve Rios grounded out to end the game. Pao was 3-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, Meyers finished 3-5 with two RBI, and Nate Petrov went 2-5 with a double and two RBI. Jared Espinosa picked up the win on the mound; Cameron Gish took the loss. The Vikings and the Pirates close out their three-game set this Saturday (2/17) at Modesto. First pitch is 1:00pm.
