Zach Smits provided the big blast and Matt Atencio had the big inning in relief to lead the West Valley baseball team to a 4-3 win over visiting Skyline. Smits roped an Austin Brown pitch into the wind in left for a solo homer to give the Vikings (6-7) a 1-0 lead in the first. After the Trojans (8-5) put up a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, WVC struck for three of their own in the home half. Nate Petrov tripled to right with one out and then scored on Jonathan Teschner's bloop single to shallow right. Teschner would come home on back-to-back wild pitches and Danny O'Reilly scored on a bases loaded walk to pinch-hitter Jared Reupert. The 4-2 Viking lead would hold until Skyline scored on three consecutive walks and a hit batter. After plunking Trojan Kasie Pohahau, Viking reliever Atencio closed out the inning with three straight bases-loaded strikeouts. Mason Mooney came on in the ninth to set the Trojans down in order to secure the win. Petrov went 2-4 to lead the seven-hit WVC offense, while Travis Varni and Erik Ochoa each had doubles. The win went to Amrin Dhillon who stock out three and gave up two hits in three innings of work. The Vikings head to Cabrillo Monday (2/25) for a 1:00pm game against the Seahawks (9-3).
