A three-run eighth lifted the West Valley baseball team to a 4-2 comeback win at San Mateo in the Coast-Golden Gate Conference opener Monday afternoon. Zach Smits got the rally started in the top of the fifth. With the Vikings trailing 2-0, Smits doubled to drive in Jonathan Teschner, who had reached on a single. Smits would pick up another run in a WVC eighth that was highlighted by a Jake Pao RBI single and a Kyle Ochoa RBI sacrifice fly. Jared Slater came on to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, shutting down the Bulldogs (10-6, 0-1) with four K's and no hits. Slater picked up the win in relief of starter Mason Mooney, who gave up a pair of runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Amrin Dhillon pitched a scoreless seventh. The Vikings host the Bulldogs Thursday (3/7) at 2:00pm.
