Five Vikings earn Coast postseason hardware

2019 recap

A quintet of Vikings were named to the All-Coast Conference 1st and 2nd team squads following the 2019 season. WVC finished third in the competeitive Coast-Golden Gate with a freshman-laden roster, just four games behind 1st place San Mateo. Matt Atencio, Mason Mooney and Zach Smits earned 1st team honors, while Steven Grizzle and Nate Petrov were named to the 2nd team. Right-handed pitcher Atencio was a stalwart in relief, going 3-0 with a save, a 0.57 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched. Viking ace Mooney went 3-3 with three saves, a 3.31 ERA and 72 K's in 70.2 innings of work, highlighted by an 11K, complete game four-hitter against Mission on April 11. Smits, who was also named the Coast Gold Glove 1st-baseman, led the Vikings in homers (4), hits (44), slugging (.447) and runs (32). He knocked in 16 runs and had a .983 fielding %. Smits will attend New Mexico St. on scholarship. Catcher Grizzle had a .289 AVG with a homer, a triple, eight doubles, 19 RBI and threw out 19 runners attempting steals. Petrov finished with a .273 average and mirrored Grizlzle with one homer, a triple, eight doubles and 19 RBI. Petrov will head to Vanguard University in Costa Mesa on scholarship. Atencio, Mooney, and Grizzle return for the 2020 season.
