Mooney signs with carson newman

Viking righthander Mason Mooney, one of the top pitchers in the Coast Conference the past two years, has signed to play at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. The Pioneer High School product finished his West Valley career with a 6-6 record in 15 starts with 106 strikeouts in 115 innings pitched, a 3.13 ERA and three saves. His 8.30 strikeouts-per-nine innings was one of the highest two year marks in northern California.

Mooney hurled three double-digit strikeout games, highlighted by an 11K, four hit, complete game gem against district rival Mission on March 12, 2019 and an 11-strikout 4-2 win over Diablo Valley on Fe, 14, 2020. He was named to the All-Coast 1st Team in 2019.

Carson-Newman is a storied NCAA DII program that has produced 22 MLB draft picks, 23 All-Americans and a national title. Under 15-year coach Tom Griffin, who picked up his 600th CNU win on Feb. 22, the Eagles were 15-10, 5-4 in the South Atlantic Conference, before the 2020 season was halted March 11.
