After helping the West Valley basketball team to a Coast-South Conference championship in 2020, Devon Banks has inked an National Letter of Intent to play at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Banks, a 6-2 guard out of Oakland, was Coach Danny Yoshikawa's starting two-guard and was widely recognized as the top defensive backcourt player in the Coast. He was named to the All-Coast 2nd Team after averaging 6-8 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 2.5 APG in 2019-2020.
Cumberland University, an NAIA D1 team, competes in the Mid-South Conference under third-year head coach Jeremy Lewis. The Phoenix, a team made up largly of underclassmen, finished 2020 with a 13-17 mark and featured NAIA All-American swingman Jalen Duke.
