Vikings go 2-0 in the 2022 West Valley Holiday Classic

The WVC men's basketball team was the lone unbeaten team in the 2022 edition of the West Valley Holiday Classic, drubbing Santa Barbara City 90-52 and caging Chabot 84-71. The Vikings improved to 13-1 as they prepare for a Dec. 20 visit from SoCal powerhouse East Los Angeles.

West Valley opened Friday's opener against SBCC with a 12-0 burst that was maintained, 37-25, at halftime. Malik Patton set the tone with a pair of buckets in the opening two minutes, and an Elijah Mahi three made it 12-0 at the 16:42 mark. The Vaqueros (5-10) scored their first points at 14:33 and the teams traded points the rest of the half.

SBCC scored on the first possession of the second half and then were outscored by West Valley 29-13 the next ten minutes. WVC canned 11 treys after the break, including four from Nick Attanasio, three from Aaron Ragen and two from Ariya Briscoe. Attanasio and Ragen finished with 12 points to lead six Vikings in double figures. Mahi and Patton had 11 each, while Briscoe and Jeremiah Dargan had 10 apiece.

Saturday's game against Chabot (6-5) started out as a defensive slugfest, with the Vikings up 13-12 with 8:46 to go in the opening half. Seven points from Patton and a pair of Attanasio threes helped WVC outscore the Gladiators 22-14 to go up 35-26 at the break. Mahi was incendiary in the second half, scoring 18 of his game-high 24 points. Baron Bracey hit for ten after halftime to finish with 15. Patton had a loud 14 and Attanasio had 10.
