Vikings improve to 8-0 with four-game sweep at Nyquist Invitational

The West Valley men's water polo stayed perfect in 2022 with four methodical wins in the 2022 Nyquist Invitational at the West Valley Aquatics Center. The Vikings (8-0) opened the tourney with Friday morning wins over Long Beach City College (15-4) and Diablo Valley (17-7). A 19-4 Saturday morning victory over Mt. San Antonio College and a 14-6 win over Cabrillo in the afternoon contest completed the weekend.

In the tournament opening "Battle  of the Vikings" against Long Beach, WVC jumped to a 4-1 first quarter lead and then outscored LBCC 5-0 in the second for a 9-1 lead at the break. West Valley was never threatened in the second half. Ante Buzov paced the stat sheet with six goals and a pair of assists, while Lucas Romaguera and Togan Ozbek found the back of the cage three times each. Kai Seed stopped 12 LBCC shots to improve to 5-0 in goal.

In the second "Battle of the Vikings" of the morning, West Valley used a 7-0 third period to run away from DVC. Alec Mortensen had a game-high four goals, while Buzov and Mario Almarza recorded three apiece. Luca Antonino notched his first collegiate win in goal, stopping eight DVC shots.

Saturday's 8:00am tilt against Mt. SAC saw the Vikings swim out to a 4-1 first-quarter lead and then blank the Mounties 3-0 in the second for a 7-1 halftime advantage. The Vikings dominated the second half 12-3 to claim the win. Bendeguz Aubeli and Almarza had a game-high three goals each, and Buzov, Derek Hanel, Gojko Kapovic, Ozbek and Romaguera had two scores each. Seed stopped 14 saves for the win in goal.

West Valley closed out the tournament against Highway 17 rival Cabrillo. The Vikings raced out to a 13-2 halftime lead and then ran out the second half clock against the Seahawks. Romaguera scored four times, while Mortensen, Ozbek and Jordan Will each had two tallies. Casey Ocallaghan stopped nine Seahawk shots on his way to the win in goal.
