The Vikings bid farewell to the WVC Softball Complex with a 3-2 walkoff win over Foothill

The West Valley softball team said goodbye to the West Valley Softball Complex Wednesday and used the venerable stadium's magic to record an improbable 3-2 win over Foothill. After more than 40 years, thousands of games played by thousands of players, two state championships and a long list of legendary Vikings, the stadium hosted its final game...and what a game it was. Foothill (29-11, 8-6 Coast-North) took a 2-0 lead in third, but the Vikings (21-17, 6-9 Coast-South) chipped away. Alexis Palmon drove in Carinne Peterson with a single in the 4th to make it 2-1. West Valley evened it up in the 5th on Chancee Gaskin's sacrifice fly to left that brought home Angelina Molina, who had reached on a catcher's interference two batters earlier. The Owls threatened in the top of the 7th with runners at first and second, but relief pitcher Palmon got Tiana Bolin to fly out to Gaskin in right to send it to the home half of the inning. Molina opened the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt back to the circle by Sierra Hillman. Gaskin then sent a 0-1 pitch left center for a single that moved Molina to third. The Owls tried to get a sliding Gaskin at third, but the throw went out of bounds. The umpires conferred and correctly sent Gaskin home with the winning run on the dead ball. Gaskin finished 1-3 with two RBI. Palmon went 2-3 with one RBI and notched the win in the circle in relief of starter Ava Gonzales, who gave up two runs on four hits while striking out two in six innings of work. The Vikings celebrated sophomores Marissa Diaz, Ava Gonzales and Mari Matos in a pre-game ceremony. West Valley will soon begin construction on a new state-of-the art facility that should be ready for play in the 2021 season.
