West Valley softball player Megumi Pennebaker is the recipient of the 2020 West Valley College President's Athlete Scholar award, WVC President Stephanie Kashima recently announced. Pennebaker, who finished her two-year West Valley academic career with a 3.94 GPA will attend Arizona St. University's Barrett, The Honors College in the fall.

She was active in numerous community programs, including the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative, and tutored WVC students in math, biology and anatomy. She will continue her studies in kinesiology at ASU.

The Monta Vista High School product was a key pinch-hitter, pinch-runner and right fielder for Viking Coach Vicky Piatt. Her career stats include a .256 average, a .407 OBP, 12 doubles and a .900 fielding percentage.

Pennebaker is the second Viking softball player in three years to receive one of West Valley's highest academic honors, joining Janelle McAfee, the William H. Cilker Valedictorian in 2018.
