Ten West Valley women's soccer players added All-Coast hardware to their trophy cases following a memorable 2018 season. The Vikings compiled a 13-5-5 overall mark and finished a game out of first in the Coast-South Conference with a 7-3-2 record. Coach Jennifer Kerwin's side opened the postseason with an inspiring 1-0 win at defending state champion and #4 NorCal seed Fresno City. WVC fell 2-0 at frigid Lake Tahoe Community College to the eventual CCCAA runnerup Coyotes in the NorCal final. West Valley, in 2018, nearly doubled its offensive output from the 2017 season. Goals increased from 36 to a Coast Conference high of 70, a rise from 1.71 goals per contest to 3.04. Goals against fell to 21 from a 2017 total of 36. Leading the way on both sides of the pitch were ten Vikings who picked up postseason accolades. Sophomore keeper Samantha Coelho was named the Coast Keeper of the Year and a 1st-Team All-Coast selection after giving up only 21 goals, a 0.91 goals-against average, posting 10 shutouts and recording 77 saves. Coelho played all 2070 minutes of the season and was the team MVP. Freshman forward Ashley Wallace led the team with 18 goals, five game-winning scores and 42 total points to earn CCCAA All-NorCal and All-Coast 1st team honors. She was the Coast Freshman of the Year and the team Offensive MVP. Joing Coelho and Wallace on the All-Coast 1st Team were FR forward April Lopez (four goals, 10 assists, 18 total points), SO defender Megan Sequeira, a two-time 1st-teamer who earned a scholarship to Menlo College and was the team's Defensive MVP, and FR defender Talia Stauble, one of 18 Vikings returning for 2019. All-Coast 2nd-team nods went to SO midfielder Katie Bonvicino (five G, five A), FR defender Janessa Cordoba and FR midfielder Milka Perez (one G, seven A), who was the team's Viking of the Year. Earning All-Coast Honorable Mention awards were SO midfielder Melanie Asquith (six G, four A, two GWG) and SO forward Holly Hopwood, who recorded nine goals, three game-winning goals and four assists in only 13 games played. Hopwood and Sequeira were named to the presigious California Community Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete squad. Freshman midfielder Britney Young rounded out the postseason awards by being named the team's Most Improved Player.
