Jenny Gonzalez broke open a scoreless tie with a brilliant shot from 20 yards out in the 26th minute to boost the West Valley women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Los Medanos in the 2022 season opener Tuesday. Gonzalez took a Samantha Lopez feed, dribbled to just outside the right corner of the box and fired a shot off the left upright and past Mustang goalie Kim Garcia for her first collegiate goal.
The 1-0 Viking lead would last until Natalia Barerra converted a Jaden Herrera pass from the top of the box at 62'. Rachel Sequeira provided the exclamation point with a breakaway goal off an Amanda Lien goalie kick just before the final whistle. Lien picked up the clean sheet victory in goal in her first collegiate start, turning away three shots on goal from the Mustangs (0-1-0).
West Valley (1-0-0) travels to the New Balance Showcase this weekend (9/2-9/3) to take on Rio Hondo (0-0-0) and host Ventura (0-1-0).
