The West Valley women's swim team ended 2021 in dominant fashion, winning all 19 events at the Las Positas June Invite on 6/3. The Vikings were paced by Heather Gray's six wins, five wins from Johanna Scheer and Maria Higginbotham, and a quartet of firsts from Marie Lucquet.
Gray, who, in 2020, turned in the CCCAA's fastest times in the 100 and 200 Fly, swam to wins in the 100 IM (1:05.80), 200 IM (2:19.10), 100 Fly (1:00.59) and the 200 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Free relays. Higginbotham captured the 100 Free (55.37), 200 Free (2:01.58), 50 Back (30.08), and swam the first leg of the winning 200 Medley and 400 Free relays. Scheer was part of four winning Viking relay teams - 200 Free, 400 Free, 200 Medley, 400 Medley - and took first in the 50 Breast (32.94), 2nd in the 100 Back (1:12.61) and 3rd in the 200 Free (2:13.57).
Lucquet was a dominant individual swimmer, taking 1sts in the 100 Breast (1:16.00), 200 Breast (2:35.73) and 500 Free (5:19.92). She swam the first leg in winning 400 Medley relay. Sierra Ceballos won the 50 Free (25.83), was 2nd in the 100 Free (57.01) and was part of three winning relay teams - the 200 Free, the 400 Free and the 400 Medley. Emily Fields won the 100 Back (1:08.68), the 200 Back (2:35.24) and was 2nd in the 50 Back (31.82). Kaylie Mendoza won the 50 Fly (30.86) and anchored the 200 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Medley wins.
Other highlights included Asya Cardenas-Miranda finishing 4th in the 100 Back (1:37.35), Selma Korkic finishing 4th in the 100 Breast (1:30.55), and Anfisa Kupriyanova taking 2nd in the 100 Fly (1:28.28) and 3rd in 100 Back (1:21.63). Marija Mijuskovic was 4th in the 200 Free (2:25.94), while Sara Phan was 2nd in the 200 Back (3:41.32) and 3rd in 50 Back (36.83) and 50 Fly (45.18), and Grace Smith finished 2nd in the 200 Breast (2:59.54) and 3rd in the 100 Breast (1:24.93).
