The West Valley women's tennis team posted a historic 7-2 win over rival Mission Friday in Saratoga, winning their first match since rebooting the program after a three-decade absence.
Coach Lauren Hickey's Vikings opened the match with a sweep of the three doubles contests. Joyce Chou and Lydia Tellgren took the 1's 8-5 over Saints Moy Troung and Olha Andriichuk, while Abigail Salazar and Sovanny Thach (2's) took care care of Isi Avila and Lionor Vargas-Perez 8-2. Arlenne Quinones and Samantha Garcia closed out the doubles with an 8-2 win over Nayeli Carmona and Karla Salinas. Mission closed to within 3-2 behind Troung's 6-1, 6-0 win over Tellgren and a default win in the 6's. It was all Vikings from there. Garcia topped Perez 2-6, 6-2, RET in the 5's, while Quinones (4's) and Thach (3's) took straight-set wins. The #2 singles match was the highlight of the afternoon as Salazar pulled out an intense 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Avila.
WVC heads to Monterey Peninsula Tuesday (3/12) and then hosts City College of San Francisco March 19. First serve at both matches is 2:00pm.
