2022 Vikings earn ITA academic team, scholar-athlete honors

In 2022, West Valley posted its finest record since resurecting the program in 2018 after a three-decade absence. Coach Lauren Hickey's Vikings finished 10-6 overall, 8-4 in a Coast Conference boasting the CCCAA state team runner-up and the state singles and doubles champion, and ended the year 16th in the state (7th among NorCal teams). WVC took care of things in the classroom too, earning the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award for the third consecutive year and placing five Vikings on the ITA Scholar-Athlete team.

"I'm proud of this team's accomplishments on the court, but even more proud of what they have consistently done in the classroom," said Hickey. "With this group, we had a fun, competitive dynamic in which they pushed each other to improve academically and on the court."

Sonya Hu, Julia Ocher, Abigail Prokter, Natasha Sackx and Tal Volinsky were ITA Scholar-Athlete selections and were joined by teammates Zeynep Aynaci, Brynn McKenzie and Seraphina Vossen on the All-Academic Team. Aynaci, Hu, Prokter and Vossen were CCCAA NorCal and state tournament qualifiers. Prokter and Vossen were All-Coast Conference selections.

"They have set the bar very high for the next team," added Hickey. "I'm excited to see what they can accomplish with this great foundation of athletic and academic success."

The ITA announces its scholar-athlete individual and team awards every summer. Teams must compile a minimum 3.2 cummulative GPA (WVC's spring 2022 team GPA was 3.59), while individual scholar-athletes must post at least a 3.5 GPA.
