My how time flies...
It seems like it was just yesterday the West Valley tennis team took to the courts for the first time in three decades. It was actually 2019 and Coach Lauren Hickey's Vikings posted a one-win season. Fast-forward to 2023 and Hickey's Vikings, amazingly, completed an undefeated, 12-0 Coast Conference championship season with 8-1 wins over Cañada and Chabot last week. West Valley finishes the regular season 13-1 on a 12-match winning streak after opening the season with a loss to NAIA four-year William Jessup University. They did not lose to a community college squad in 2023.
The CCCAA announced Sunday the 2nd-ranked Vikings will open the NorCal playoffs Tuesday (4/11) against #8 Reedley (5-5, 4-5 Central Valley). First serve is slated for 2:00pm.
Much as they have done all season, Hickey used her team's depth to dominate Cañada (5-6, 2-4) and Chabot (9-7, 8-4). Allison Bartlett and Lavanika Sharma won their singles and doubles matches at Cañada, while Abigail Prokter returned fully healthy from a nagging hip injury to post twin wins against the Renegades.
West Valley, in addition to Tuesday's playoff opener, hosts the 2023 Coast Conference Championship Tournament April 13-15 at the WVC Tennis Complex.
