West Valley College volleyball 2018

After knocking off top-seeded Cabrillo in last week's NorCal final in Aptos, the West Valley volleyball team squares off against another #1, Irvine Valley, in the opener of the CCCAA Volleyball State Championships Friday morning at 10:00am. The Vikings (17-9), seeded 4th in the north, are making their first appearance in the tourney since 2006 and are led by state kills-per-set leader (4.80) and first-team All-American Mapuhola Sekona. The two-time All-Coast South Conference first-teamer is joined on a formidable Viking front line by All-Coast first team selection Kaylin Henderson and first-year stalwarts Jenna Gomes, Shannon Greene and Rene Wash. Freshmen Audrey Fernandez and Kayla Keller, both All-Coast second team selections, round out coach Armen Zakarian's starting rotation. Irvine Valley comes into the tournament 20-1, earning a finals berth by sweeping #16 Pasadena City and #9 Ventura. Coach Tom Pestolesi's Lasers feature Orange Empire Conference co-MVPs Renata Bath and Lea Kruse.
