With the match tied at 1-1 and West Valley clinging to a 10-5 lead in set three, Rowynn Funk stepped back to serve. 13 points later, in the immortal words of Tower of Power, Monterey Peninsula had been "funkifized" and the Vikings were up 23-5. Three points later, West Valley took the set 25-6 and led the match 2-1. The Vikings and the Lobos traded sideouts in set four, before WVC (5-10) pulled away for the 25-17 victory and a 3-1 match win.
The 13-point Funk run was a WVC season high and came after the Lobos (7-2) had grabbed the momentum with a solid 25-18 win in set two, countering a convincing 25-15 win for the Vikings in the opening set. Funk's stat line included eight kills, a .400 hitting % and a trio of service aces.
Sophie Ehret, as is often the case, led the WVC attack with 19 kills (.455%) and 17 digs. Julia LaPierre followed Ehret with 12 kills, while Francesca Zanotti and Lavelua Stepp connected on seven and five swings, respectively. Rachel Sanchez came up with 13 digs, and Ashjeet Kaur finished with 12 digs and two aces. LaPierre and Stepp each had two solo blocks.
The Vikings host Hartnell (6-9) Wednesday, Oct. 2. First serve is 5:00pm.
