
The West Valley women's water polo team capped a 4-0 run through the Cuesta Invitational with a 12-5 win over perennial state powerhouse City College of Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon.
Coach Erika Vargas's Vikings opened the tourney Friday with a 10-7 win over Cerritos in which Johanna Scheer scored nine of WVC's goals. Keeper Grace Smith had 11 saves and then had ten more later that afternoon in WVC's 11-3 victory over host Cuesta. Scheer added a team-high six goals against the Cougars. Scheer found the back of the net four more times and Smith stopped ten shots in WVC's 11-5 win over Fresno City Saturday morning.
Scheer opened the Santa Barbara contest with four straight goals and then added two more just before halftime, giving the Vikings a 6-2 lead at the break. She made it 8-3 with her seventh goal at the end of the third. WVC outscored CCSB 4-2 in the fourth on two goals from Kianna Melvin and one each from Marija Mijuskovic and Aaliyah Lax.
The Vikings host the West Valley Invitational Sept. 17-18. The tournament features Cuesta, Foothill, Merced, Modesto, Mt. San Antonio, Ohlone, San Joaquin Delta and the Vikings. WVC faces Modesto at 9:10am and Mt. SAC at 4:00pm Friday, and then take on Cuesta at 11:30am and SJ Delta at 5:20pm Saturday.
